Gartner reports that the enterprise security software market will see continued shifts. As reported by CIO Update, in the enterprise licensed software is giving way to cost-saving technologies like the cloud and easier-to-deploy approaches like dedicated appliances. Gartner's report concluded that compliance remains an important driver across many segments, particularly user provisioning, security information and event management (SIEM) and mobile data protection.

"'During the next six to 12 months, products delivered as SaaS and appliances will continue overtaking traditional software licensing as the preferred purchasing methods,' Gartner analyst Matthew Cheung said in the report. 'Delivery as a suite in subsegments such as enterprise endpoint security, identity and access management (IAM), and Web security will be the most prevalent product delivery types.'

"The emergence of new, cloud-based security applications, particularly for identity and access management, are giving enterprise IT chiefs more options to choose from as well as the ability to essentially outsource much of their day-to-day security concerns. As a side benefit, opting for SaaS security apps and platforms gives IT managers more flexibility, time and money to focus on other projects such as virtualization or much-needed software updates that had been left on the back burner during the recession."
