Nokia Siemens Networks Fills $10M Order

NBN Co’s head of corporate services, Kevin Brown announced a contract with Nokia Siemens representing the first phase that could be worth up to $400 million over ten years. Nokia Siemens Networks will supply $10 million worth of optical transmission networking systems for the National Broadband Network. These transmission systems are typically designed in rings to provide two paths to every site and Nokia Siemens’ dense wavelength division multiplex (DWDM) optical transmission equipment would be used to provide connectivity between
fiber access nodes, aggregation sites and points of interconnect of NBN.

“In April Nokia Siemens completed an upgrade to Tasmania’s optical fibre backbone provided by Aurora, which has underpinned the NBN rollout in Tasmania.
It also lists Telstra, Optus and VHA among its local telecommunications sector clients. Internationally the company claims that a quarter of the world’s population use its infrastructure to connect each day.
A spokesman for Nokia Siemens today confirmed that the 600 strong Australian organisation would likely expand as a result of the NBN order, although the speed and scale of that expansion was tied to the speed of NBN’s rollout. The equipment used in the backbone network will be manufactured in Germany, but services including design, logistics, installation, commissioning, local pre-deployment, system testing and care will be provided by the local team he added.
Although Australian consumers of NBN service are being promised speeds of up to 100 Mbps initially (and up to 1Gbps in the future) the backbone network needs to be much fatter and faster.”
