Amazon Web Services is offering 10 days of service credit to customers affected by its recent European data center outage. A lightning strike was initially tapped as the culprit for the outage, but AWS has since issued a thorough summary admitting that the incident was caused by the failure of a programmable logic controller connecting backup generators.

As a result, AWS will deploy environmentally isolated PLCs and add redundant systems to prevent future outages. In addition, the company will overhaul backup systems to allow snapshots to be restored to a server directly rather than moved from another machine. AWS also vowed to improve its communication with customers during outages and plans to provide more detailed updates in response to similar events going forward, says InformationWeek.
