Amazon Outage Stirs Cloud Debate

After four days, Amazon's EC2 outage appears to be over, but Amazon and affected sites are still recovering.

After four days, Amazon's EC2 outage appears to be over, but Amazon and affected sites are still recovering. Last week's outage took down more than 70 sites, including Foursquare, Hootsuite, Quora and Reddit. Amazon's service health dashboard reported that the service was fully repaired, but some customers' data storage had not yet been restored, according to CNNMoney.

The source of the problem still has yet to be unveiled. Amazon has promised to reveal details later:

We are digging deeply into the root causes of this event and will post a detailed post mortem.

The incident serves as a black eye for Amazon and for cloud services in general, says Forbes. Companies pondering the use of cloud services may now be slower to get involved since Amazon, an industry leader, has suffered such a major crash.
