An October 1 memo sent from federal Chief Information Officer Vivek Kundra and Homeland Security Department CIO Richard Spiers indicated that there are 2,094 federal data centers, nearly 1,000 more than previous estimates, reports Silicon Valley Sleuth. The oversight may be due to the methodology that counted any room greater than 500 square feet that is devoted to data processing as a data center.

The effort to count federal data centers is part of the Federal Data Center Consolidation Initiative. The multi-year effort is aimed at reducing costs, promoting energy efficiency in IT and bolstering cyber security. The Department of Defense accounted for the most data centers with 772. It was followed by the Department of State (361) and Department of the Interior (210).
