Microsoft announced last Friday that it will open its most advanced data center to date at Boydton Industrial Park in Mecklenbug County, Va.

The company plans to invest up to $499 million in the project, making it the most lucrative investment project in Southern Virginia History, reports Data Center Dynamics.

Virginia beat out neighboring North Carolina for the project, which will create 50 new jobs. A pair of grants from the Governor's Opportunity Fund and the Virginia Tobacco Indemnification and Community Revitalization Commission  totaling $6.9 million will go toward supporting Microsoft's latest modular data center.

According to DataCenterKnowledge, the facility will use Microsoft's IT-PAC container-based design and will serve as the company's East Coast hub for its online services.

Earlier this summer Microsoft resumed its data center project in Iowa as part of its new effort to position itself as a leader in cloud computing.
