Microsoft's Project Daytona Takes It into the Big Data Space

Microsoft announced a set of tools and services built around the Azure platform that will allow researchers to analyze extremely large data sets.

Microsoft announced a set of tools and services built around the Azure platform that will allow researchers to analyze extremely large data sets. The initiative, called Project Daytona, is part of the eXtreme Computing Group's Cloud Research Engagement Initiative. Daytona is powered by a runtime version of MapReduce, developed by Google.

Still in the research technology preview stage, Daytona is geared toward researchers and scientists in a multitude of fields, including education, environmental science and health care, according to InformationWeek. According to Microsoft, Daytona is expected to be a foundation of enterprise business intelligence solutions and is ideal for data analytics, data mining, financial analysis and machine learning, PCMag.com reports.
