Modular Data Centers on the Up and Up

Containerized data centers are becoming a mainstay of server manufacturers.

More and more CIOs are looking to modular and containerized solutions for quick and easy expansion, according to Arthur Cole over at our IT Business Edge site. Cole cites Gartner analyst David Cappuccio, who says interest in container systems is picking up for two reasons: the ability to gradually increase capability without the time and money constraints of a traditional facility and an improvement in the overall design of modular and containerized solutions.

UK-based Cannon Technologies has expanded into the modular data center market with its T4 Modular Data Centers. The units can be deployed indoors or out and are configured to meet the needs of enterprise or military users, according to Data Center Knowledge.

Microsoft has also completed construction of its new modular data center in Quincy, Wash. The facility is the company's first using its PAC (Pre-Assembled Components) design approach, reports DatacenterDynamics. Microsoft completed construction of the data center in nine months and reduced its development costs by more than 50 percent.
