Twitter Warns of Additional Outages

Record World Cup Web traffic has exposed Twitter scalability challenges.

Matthew Ingram at GigaOm asks whether the world needs more than one Twitter. While some argue that the service is frivilous, Twitter has served as a vital communication tool for police and emergency response teams and has played an important role in natural disasters and historic protests.

The service has experienced its worst month in terms of downtime since last October and has been a casualty of the World Cup and Twitter is warning of even more downtime. Not only is the surge in Web traffic as a result of the World Cup an issue, but unexpected complexities related to fixing and optimizing its systems both before and during the sporting event have troubled the company as well, says V3.co.uk.
