EUC with HCI: Why It Matters

When Juniper Networks acquired Contrail in December 2012, it was all about software defined networking (SDN). Now in 2019, Contrail is a much broader platform that is central to Juniper Network's overall growth strategy.

On April 8, Juniper announced that an updated version of the Contrail Service Orchestration platform is now available as a cloud delivered Software-as-a-Service offering. Previously, Contrail Service Orchestration was only available as an on-premises solution, installed on Juniper hardware such as the SRX services gateway, though the solution was positioned as being cloud-enabled.

"Cloud-delivered SD-WAN removes the complexity of software operations, arguably the most difficult part of SDN," Bikash Koley, CTO of Juniper Networks wrote in a blog. "The on-premises SD-WAN solution, available for some time, is now offered as a service, bringing a managed cloud-delivered deployment option for the first time."

The new as-a-service option for Contrail Service Orchestration also bring benefits to on-premises deployments as well, enabling organization to centrally manage WAN and LAN policies.

Beyond just providing a new cloud service model for SD-WAN and enterprise network management, Juniper is also integrating new artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities into the platform.

The new AI features come from Juniper's $405 million acquisition of Mist Systems, which closed on April 1.

"We believe in the Software-Defined Enterprise and Mist’s focus on bringing AI to IT is consistent with our core belief that we need to simplify operations and improve customer experience while lowering costs," Rami Rahim, CEO of Juniper Networks, stated. "With Mist, we are adding a market leading solution to complement our portfolio, drive the cloud transition within the enterprise and accelerate our enterprise growth."

The Mist Systems integration is part of the new SD-WAN management interface, providing operational and analytics data about WLAN, WAN, LAN and security operations.
