Arista Networks Advances CloudVision to Campus and 400 Gigabit for Datacenters

Arista expands its campus efforts with new CloudVision technology and scales up its switching platform for 400 Gigabit networking.

There are two truths in enterprise networking today: hardware needs to be driven by software, and there is (almost) always a need for more bandwidth.

Arista Networks has been busy in October, delivering solutions for both enterprise networking truths. It announced the expansion of its CloudVision architecture for campus networks and unveiled new 400 Gigabit Ethernet platforms.

CloudVision

The CloudVision architecture is all about applying cloud concepts, including software-defined networking and workload elasticity, to networking. Arista originally focused on delivering its CloudVision for data center networks and is now expanding that focus to include enterprise campus networks as well.

Back in August, Arista announced its first products for the campus: the 7300X3 and 7050X3 spline switches.

With CloudVision, Arista is bringing the cloud operational model, which is rooted in the Cognitive Management Plane (CMP) engine, to campus networks. As part of the rollout, the Cognitive Campus architecture aims to unify both wireless and wired networking elements into a common control plane for improved operational efficiency and visibility.

Cognitive WiFi is another new Arista innovation for the campus, built on technology the company acquired in August, with the purchase of Mojo Networks. The Cognitive Campus integrates multiple tools for WiFi security as well, including a Wireless Intrusion Protection System (WIPS) and a tracerl tool for network health and visibility.

"Legacy WiFi solutions focus on basic connectivity and provide little insight into performance. Arista’s Cognitive WiFi with Arista EOS and CloudVision focuses on the customer’s experience, ensuring application performance and reachability," John McCool, chief platform officer, senior vice president of engineering and operations for Arista, stated.

400 GbE

As cloud demand grows, legacy 10 Gigabit Ethernet links are being over-subscribed liked never before. 100 Gigabit Ethernet has found its way into data centers, but that's not enough either for the largest deployments.

Arista already has 100 Gigabit-capable platforms in market and is now moving forward with new 400 Gigabit platform capabilities. 400 Gigabit Ethernet finished its IEEE standardization in late 2017 as IEEE 802.3bs, and vendors have been racing to enable interoperable platform and solutions ever since. In September, the European Conference on Optical Communication hosted a public demonstration of interoperable 400 GbE networking gear. Multiple vendors including Cisco and Juniper Networks have already been ramping up their 400 GbE efforts, and now it's Arista's turn.

The new Arista 7060x4 Series switches include two models. The 7060PX4-32 model supports 32 ports of OSFP, and the 7060DX4-32 has 32 ports of QSFP-DD. At the core of 7060 is a Broadcom Tomahawk 3 chip, which can handle up to 12.8 Tbps of bandwidth.

"We are delighted to introduce our first 400G switching platforms delivering four times the throughput, double the price/performance and double the power efficiency of our previous 100G platforms," Andreas Bechtolsheim, Arista’s chairman and chief development officer, stated. "These products will address pent up demand for more bandwidth in cloud networks, allowing cloud service providers to build much more scalable networks."
