Interop: Alcatel-Lucent Enterprise Expands Wired and Wireless Portfolio

New Alcatel-Lucent Enterprise gear includes 802.11ac Wave 2 access points and new wired switches with SDN support.

LAS VEGAS - Alcatel-Lucent Enterprise (ALE) is helping to kick off the Interop conference here with a series of new product announcements.

On the wireless side, ALE is introducing three new versions of 802.11ac Wave 2 Wi-Fi access points, including the AP 334/335, IAP 324/325 and AP 314/315. The xx4 devices include internal antennas, while the xx5s use external antenna.

"These AP’s do not replace other AP’s," Heitor Faroni, Director of Solutions Marketing - Network Business Division at Alcatel-Lucent Enterprise, told Enterprise Networking Planet. "They just expand the family of wave 2 AP’s."

The 300 series is now the flagship 802.11ac Wave 2 access point family from ALE, enabling a peak data rate of 1,733Mbps.

On the wired side, ALE is introducing the OmniSwitch 6860E-P24Z8, which Faroni explained is a new access switch mainly targeted to interface to the Wave 2 AP's, since it supports multi-gig Ethernet interfaces (2.5G).

"It also stacks with the other existing switches of the OS6860 family," Faroni said. "It perfectly complements the existing access switch product line."

ALE is also introducing the Alcatel-Lucent OmniSwitch 9900 which is a 7 slot, 11RU box.

"It is a versatile chassis that can be used anywhere in a network infrastructure [core/distribution/access] as well as in the datacenter," Faroni said. "It is a natural replacement of the existing OmniSwitch 9000E chassis."

He added that the OS9900 supports virtual networking with multiple technologies, including SPB-M, VXLAN, VLAN, L3 VPN and automatic classification of virtual machines, IoT endpoints and users. It also supports SDN via python scripting, OpenFlow and OpenStack.

From a Software Defined Networking (SDN) perspective, Faroni noted that all of ALE's switching solutions support SDN end-to-end from the campus to the datacenter.

"SDN programmability is provided inside the switches by offering built-in sandbox for customized scripts with Python, OpenFlow and RESTFul web services interface to use, for instance, with OpenStack," Faroni said.

Additionally, ALE currently enables SDN-based management by supporting orchestration with OpenStack in public distribution, IT automation with Chef, OpenDaylight controller, VMware NSX and Nuage Networks controller.

With the recent closing of the Alcatel-Lucent sale to Nokia on the carrier side of the business, Alcatel-Lucent Enterprise has not made any public comment about changing its name.

"The company's legal name is ALE, operating under the Alcatel-Lucent Enterprise brand," Faroni said. "With that said, we won’t be changing the name anytime soon."
