Juniper Networks is acquiring privately-held application infrastructure software vendor AppFormix in a deal announced December 1. Financial terms of the transaction were not disclosed.

AppFormix emerged from stealth in June 2015 in a bid to provide greater visibility and performance for enterprise apps. At the time the company also announced a $7 million Series A round of funding, led by August Capital.

The promise of AppFormix's technology is that it provides real-time control and monitoring of hybrid cloud infrastructure to enable the best possible application deployment environments. The AppFormix system runs as an agent on the host system, and it can run inside a Docker container that can run inside of a virtual machine.

In April, AppFormix expanded its technology with an integration with the new Intel Xeon processor E5-2600 v4 for servers and the Intel Resource Director Technology (RDT) technology.

On June 23, the company announced its new ContainerFlow technology specifically designed to monitor container application workflows.

"Although there are a few operations management products in the market, most of them are built for generic IT workloads and environments," Ankur Singla, vice president of SDN and Orchestration Systems at Juniper, said in a statement." AppFormix is unique in that it combines the power of machine learning and streaming analytics with application awareness of orchestration systems like Openstack and Kubernetes."

Singla knows a thing or two about software companies as he was CEO and founder of Contrail Systems, which was acquired by Juniper for $176 million in December 2012.

Sumeet Singh, founder and CEO of AppFormix, said both his company and Juniper are deeply integrated with the OpenStack and Kubernetes communities.

"These technologies define how we’re able to support customers building and running public, private and hybrid infrastructures at scale," Singh said. "Together, AppFormix and Juniper can give OpenStack and Kubernetes operators an automated monitoring environment that’s built from the ground up for DevOps and developer agility."

The plan according to Singh is for AppFormix to remain a Juniper brand and continue marketing the platform under that name. The current AppFormix team is becoming part of the Juniper team, working under the Office of the CTO.
