Cyber Fraud Losses Doubled in 2009, Says FBI

In 2009, the total number of complaints were up 22.3 percent from the previous year.

According to the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation's Internet Crime Complaint Center, cybe rfraud losses totalled $559.7 million in 2009, more than double the tally for 2008.

Interestingly enough, Computerworld reports that FBI -themed scams made up 16.6 percent of the 336,655 complaints that the IC3 received last year. In 2009, the total number of complaints were up 22.3 percent from the previous year.

Other common scams include the non-delivery of merchandise or payments, advance-fee fraud and fake anti-virus software.
