Pioneering cryptographer Whitfield Diffie will be joining the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers in order to help the oversight body in its security efforts, reports V3.co.uk.

Diffie will serve as vice president of information security and cryptography, offering advice on general security matters. ICANN says he will also help develop and carry out security methods for the agency's networks, as well as oversee the improvement of best practice processes in information security and cryptography.

Says ICANN president and chief executive Rod Beckstrom:

Diffie brings an extraordinary intellect and immense professional achievements to ICANN, and his appointment reflects my strong commitment to improving ICANN's technical security.
