According to a report by the Anti-Phishing Working Group, a single Eastern European gang is responsible for nearly two-thirds of all phishing attempts in the last half of 2009.

Computerworld reports that researchers have dubbed the group Avalanche because of the large quantity of attacks it generates. The group was responsible for more than 84,000 out of the nearly 127,000 phishing attacks tracked by APWG.

APWG seems to have put a dent in Avalanche after taking down Avalanche's infrastructure for about a week. According to Greg Aaron, director of domain security with Internet infrastructure vendor Afilias, Avalanche attacks have tapered off precipitously.
