According to eSecurity Planet, Symantec's MessageLabs Intelligence report for October discovered a sharp rise in spear-phishing attacks in the retail industry.

The report found that phishing campaigns have jumped from one or two cases a week just five years ago to more than 70 a day in October. Spear-phishing attacks reached 516 separate incidents in the retail sector in October, a sharp increase from just seven attacks for the rest of the year. Symantec says the campaigns targeted two specific retail companies, which the company did not identify.

In more positive news, Symantec's reports found that spam volumes continue to drop.
