Vulnerabilities Found in Smart Meters

Hackers could steal meters and reprogram them or wirelessly hack the meter from a laptop.

According to security researchers, the new "smart" meters have flaws that could let hackers tamper with the power grid, reports The Associated Press. Not only do the vulnerabilities open the door for attackers to jack up strangers' power bills, but could also allow hackers to remotely turn someone else's power on and off.

According to redOrbit, Joshua Wright, a senior security analyst with InGuardians Inc., which was hired by utility companies to study the meters' resistance to attack, says hackers could steal meters and reprogram them or wirelessly hack the meter from a laptop. According to Wright, vulnerabilities were found in products from all five meter manufacturers that were studied.
