Demand for Ethernet switches has continued to growing into 2018, according to IDC's first quarter 2018 (1Q18) Worldwide Quarterly Ethernet Switch Tracker.

The firm reported that during 1Q18 the global Ethernet switch market generated $6.29 in revenue, for a 10.9 percent year-over-year gain.

"After modest gains in 2017, the Ethernet switch market started 2018 with a strong first quarter," Rohit Mehra, vice president, Network Infrastructure at IDC, stated.

In Mehra's view, among the macro trends that are helping to drive Ethernet switch growth is the continued demand by both large enterprises and services providing for faster Ethernet speeds to enable cloud rollouts.

Different segments of the Ethernet market are growing at different rates. According to IDC, 10 GbE port shipments grew by 41.6 percent in the quarter, with revenue growth of 5.1 percent. In contrast, 40 GbE revenues declined by 4 percent, though port shipments grew by 7.8 percent.

The big winners during the quarter were 25 GbE and 100 GbE. IDC reported that 25 GbE port shipments grew by 359 percent, with revenue up by 176 percent. For 100 GbE, IDC reported port shipment growth of 117.7 percent, with revenue up by 83.8 percent.

Once again, Cisco held the top spot in terms of vendor market share. According to IDC, in 1Q18 Cisco commanded 53.4 percent of the global Ethernet switching market, which was down marginally from the 55.0 percent reported in 1Q17.
