Extreme Networks Closes Deal to Acquire Brocade's Data Center Networking Assets

Less than 30 days after announcing a new approach to acquiring Brocade's technology, Extreme completes the $55M deal.

On Oct. 30, Extreme Networks announced that it completed its planned acquisition of data center networking assets from Brocade.

The completion of the deal comes less than 30 days after Extreme Networks announced that it was planning to acquire the Brocade assets directly from Brocade, rather than wait until after Brocade was acquired by Broadcom.

Broadcom originally announced in November 2016 that it was going to acquire Brocade, in a deal valued at $5.9 billion. As part of that deal, Broadcom pledge to spin out the IP networking assets to avoid potential conflicts with its partners. Broadcom's acquisition of Brocade has yet to close, and Extreme Networks has been eager to close the deal and move on with its integration plans.

"This is an exciting day for Extreme as we have now significantly strengthened our position in the expanding high-end data center market with the industry-leading solution for enterprise customers," Ed Meyercord, president and CEO of Extreme Networks stated. "Through a series of synergistic acquisitions, Extreme is now a top player in the enterprise networking industry and expects to generate over $1 billion in annual revenues."

Extreme Networks has been very busy over the course of the last year with its acquisition efforts. The Brocade deal is the third completed by Extreme in the past year, as the company aims to expand its portfolio and gain networking market share.

In September 2016, Extreme announced the acquisition of WLAN technology from Zebra in a $55 million deal. The WLAN technology that Extreme Networks is now gaining has its roots at Motorola. Zebra Technologies acquired Motorola Solutions Inc. for $3.45 billion in 2014.

On July 21, Extreme closed its $100 million acquisition of Avaya's IP networking business.

"We're really excited to be focused on networking," Meyercord said at the time the Avaya deal closed. "This is our sweet spot, and this is all that we're doing, and we're focused."
