VMware's SpringSource unit will acquire GemStone Systems, which makes software that caches data for Java across a server cluster to help scale applications. SpringSource says the purchase will allow it to develop the infrastructure for cloud applications and enable built-in scalability, security and performance enhancements, CRN Australia reports.

This buy is the latest in VMware's quest to become a supplier of software to cloud builders. The company's previous purchase of Rabbit Technologies shows it is clearly focused on the role of data management in application deployment in the cloud, notes Mike Vizard over at our CTO Edge site.
