In Brief: McAfee ThreatScan Targets Network "Soft Spots"

Anti-virus software manufacturer McAfee has announced the release of McAfee ThreatScan, a product designed to assess a network for vulnerabilities before viruses such as Code Red and Nimda can exploit them.

ThreatScan works with McAfee's ePolicy Orchestrator product to audit network devices within a given IP range, identifying operating systems and how up-to-date the patches on each device are. ThreatScan also assesses ports on which devices may be listening and identifies open shares.

In addition to scanning systems, ThreatScan also provides suggestions for dealing with potential vulnerabilities and reports on compliance with security policies.

The package is available for Windows NT and Windows 2000, and works with Internet Explorer 5.
