Riverbed Debuts Stingray for Application Delivery and Web Content Optimization
Riverbed (NASDAQ:RVBD) is expanding its production portfolio this week with new Stingray Application Deliver Control (ADC), Web Application Firewall (WAF) and Web Content Optimization (WCO) technologies.
The new technologies come from Riverbed's recent acquisitions of Zeus and Aptimize in July.
"This follow-on from our acquisitions is really starting to bring the acquired products into the Riverbed fold," Apurva Davé, VP of product marketing at Riverbed told InternetNews.com. "We're announcing more than just a new name, we're announcing a new enterprise subscription model and security integration."
The Stingray Traffic Manager is the new ADC product that leverages technology from Zeus. Dave explained that Riverbed has given the user interface a new look and feel over what it had at Zeus. The new Stingray Aptimizer, based on the former Aptimize technology is all about WCO for optimizing actual web content. On the security front the Stringray WAF provides security to the ADC and web content delivery.
"Web Content Optimization modifies your images and files in real time so that they can be more efficiently rendered across the Internet in your browser," Dave said.
Google has its mod_pagespeed technology which also delivers Web Content Optimization. Dave noted that Google's effort is somewhat limited in that it doesn't apply to SSL encrypted pages.
"You're kinda S.O.L. for the business critical apps that people care about," Dave said.
With the move to the ADC space, Riverbed will now find itself in competition with ADC heavyweight, F5. Dave said that he's not particularly concerned about competition with F5 for a number of reasons. In his view the Riverbed portfolio provides for portable forms of application delivery and is not hardware-bound.
"It's no longer an ADC vs. ADC contest on speeds and feeds, it's more about how the technology works within an automated virtualization framework," Dave said.
Riverbed's new products are intended to integrate as part of an overall approach to improving content and WAN access. The existing Riverbed Steelhead is about WAN optimization for symmetric connections, with appliances at both ends.
"With the ADC component we get acceleration and the ability to scale apps," Dave said. "Since ADC's are Asymmetric it's easy to spin up."
The Riverbed Cascade portfolio of product then pulls the various piece of the content delivery puzzle together by providing performance data.
"Cascade gives you a complete sense of how performance is achieved in your environment," Dave said. This is important regardless if you're using all of Riverbed's optimization components or just one of them or some mix thereof."
