Net Tip: Hide Your Servers

By Enterprise Networking Planet Staff | Nov 7, 2002 | Print this Page

Previously, we discussed the importance of keeping potentially volatile information away from computers where it can be seen casually, or by temp or other transitory workers. This time, we show you how to hide your servers from browsers and / or Windows' Network Neighborhood.

Caveat:   This is, in essence, a hack which will change your system registry, so be sure to have backed the registry up before going through this process.
  • Run regedt
  • Drill down through the registry hierarchy to:
  • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\lanmanserver\parameters
  • Add a new key with the following attributes:
    • Value Name: Hidden
    • Data Type: REG_DWORD
    • Value Data: 1 (1=enable, 0=disable)
