CounterPath Gets SIP Video Plus Presence
CounterPath Solutions, Inc., the company formerly known as Xten Networks, is partnering with enterprise instant messaging (EIM) vendor Antepo Inc., to deliver presence for SIP-Video-over-IP softphone users.
The eyeBeam SIP video softphone from CounterPath has now been certified to interoperate with Antepo's enterprise IM and presence management Open Presence Network (OPN) system. Antepo is an official AOL Enterprise Federation Partner and provides IM connectivity to AOL Instant Messenger (AIM), as well as XMPP (definition) and SIP/SIMPLE (definition)based network protocols.
The combined Antepo-CounterPath solution claims to offer enterprises a seamless end-to-end solution for instant messaging, presence, and IP based-video and voice communications.
Donovan Jones, VP of Sales & Marketing at CounterPath explained that the Antepo solution is server-based, and that CounterPath is focused on building software that interoperates with feature-server solutions such as Antepo's. "We certainly could build or buy capabilities but the model that we believe will be successful will be to partner," Jones told VoIPplanet.com.
To date there have been several barriers to adoption of an integrated video softphone and presence solution in the enterprise.
"Perhaps the most relevant has been the RoI model from the perspective of the enterprise," Jones said. "Another barrier has been the multitude of options available for users."
According to Jones, a key issue that the CounterPath solution is addressing is providing the "right" features and functionality to users in terms that are salient to them.
CounterPath is certainly no stranger to the IP softphone market and claims that there are currently over 5.4 million deployed endpoints of CounterPath technology. To date, CounterPath's focus has been on the service provider marketplace; the company's client list currently includes Vonage, Yahoo!, Deutche Telecom, Yak, and Lucent, among others.
Jones noted that they expect to see some significant success with customers whose names will become publicly available in the coming months. He also noted that CounterPath will be broadening its offerings to other devices and platforms.
"In addition we have made some significant strides with protocols such as XMPP in addition to SIMPLE at customer request," Jones said. "I also expect some focus on markets in which we have not traditionally played a significant role with ancillary product offerings relevant for these markets."
