In August 2008, IP voice and video processing solutions provider Global IP Solutions (GIPS) launched an adaptation of its widely acclaimed VoiceEngine Mobile technology for the second generation iPhone.

Today, the San Francisco-based company announced a similar adaptation for the Android platform, which has gained a lot of traction in the past few months. The solution will allow developers to quickly and easily create VoIP applications for Android phones that provide HD (high definition) voice quality (which has also gained a lot of traction of late).

"GIPS VoiceEngine allows Android developers to build VoIP-enabled applications that offer HD voice, while tackling all the typical IP network issues—such as delay, jitter, packet loss, bandwidth constraints, noise, and echo," said GIPS’ Chief Technology Officer, Roar Hagen, in a statement. "With GIPS engineering expertise, developers can quickly and effectively build their applications enabling them to concentrate on their core business."

In a coordinated announcement, Netherlands-based "unified social networking" service provider Numbuzz—which launched its first client application for Android this past August—gave notice that it will be the first provider to use the new GIPS module to HD enable its VoIP service on Android phones.

(Nimbuzz unites a wide array of IM and voice over IM platforms, such as Skype, Windows Live Messenger, Google Talk, AIM, ICQ, and Yahoo Messenger—as well as social networking platforms, including Facebook and MySpace—and supports a broad selection of mobile handsets in addition to Android phones.)

"Nimbuzz is delighted to offer free mobile VoIP calls to Android users. VoIP is fast becoming established as a mainstream standard for voice calling and will represent a major part of the mobile ecosystem of the future," said Nimbuzz CEO Evert-Jaap Lugt.

"With the addition of high-quality HD Voice to our free IM and chat functions, thousands of new and existing Nimbuzz users on Android will now be able to enjoy a complete communications and messaging service in one," he concluded.

As mentioned, Android has been coming on strong in recent months. Gartner Research recently released predictions that the platform will surpass the iPhone in popularity by 2012, taking an estimated 14.5 percent of smartphone market share.
