IP Telecoms MSP Deploys Ecessa WAN Device for 24/7 Uptime

Florida-based telecommunications services provider United World Telecom offers international VoIP service plus a panoply of money-saving international calling options to wholesale, retail, and enterprise customers—virtual calling cards, ANI (automatic number identification) callback, international callback, Web trigger callback, and the like.

Aside from its own switching infrastructure, a key to the company's current strength is its relationships with multiple international telephony carriers, and—more recently—the deployment of WAN connections provisioned from multiple Internet service providers.

The move to a diversified WAN connectivity portfolio was prompted by occasional network outages from it erstwhile sole WAN provider, which seriously impacted the delivery of IP-based communications services.

"If we didn’t have Internet redundancy built in, and any of our T1s went down, our VoIP and web services would not be available to our customers during that time. As you can imagine, that is unacceptable to us," noted Adrian Caramaliu, United World Telecom's network engineering manager.

To make the multiple WAN connections work seamlessly together, the company this week announced the deployment of PowerLink WAN link optimization (i.e., load-balancing and failover) technology from Minnesota-based Ecessa, which now provides its wide area network with redundancy and automatic failover.

"By having Internet connection redundancy, we no longer have to deal with network outages," said Caramaliu. "PowerLink eliminates our having to react to an Internet service provider outage by providing us with extra protection with WAN redundancy. Network outages do occur quite frequently. However, with PowerLink automatically managing the failover, and then load balancing traffic back when the connection comes back online, neither the IT department nor our customers are affected."

Moreover, the PowerLink technology also incorporates an authoritative DNS server. Not only is this useful to facilitate address management related to inbound Web content and service requests, since PowerLink is resident at the domain site—and is constantly monitoring the status of T1 connections—the server can remove failed connections from the DNS tables immediately. This enhances the smooth, uninterrupted delivery of services.

"We find that managed service providers like United World Telecom receive much value from our products, as they rely upon the Internet to deliver their services. If the network connection that delivers their services goes down, their business goes down too," commented Ecessa vice president of sales Jason Breyer. "Products like PowerLink are becoming a must have for MSPs that are concerned about network disaster recovery, link optimization, and security."

On the enterprise side, Ecessa's PowerLink solution is also being deployed—especially in companies with multiple locations—to aggregate (bond and load-balance) multiple low-cost WAN links to ensure adequate bandwidth to all locations for VoIP, video conferencing, and other specialized communications applications—and, as with United World Telecom, providing redundancy and failover.
