Brazil's largest cable company will use networking equipment from Motorola to introduce Voice over IP services.

Net Servicos de Comunicacao will install 11 Motorola BSR 64000 CMTS/edge routers as part of an infrastructure upgrade, the companies announced today at the National Cable & Telecommunications trade show in San Francisco.

The cable operator will also offer two pieces of Motorola customer premise equipment (CPE): the SBV5120 modem, which provides access to VoIP and high-speed data from a single device; and the Motorola SBG900, which integrates an 802.11g hotspot with a cable modem.

The improvements follow a period of growth for Net Servicos de Comunicacao, which now has 1.4 million cable customers and 180,000 broadband subscribers in 44 cities.

High-speed Internet access is a prerequisite for VoIP and other advanced services that can boost service providers' average revenue per customer.

"Having next-generation infrastructure and CPE will allow us to offer a multitude of services beyond broadband data," Ciro Kawamura, the cable company's product and marketing director, said in a statement.

Financial terms of the agreement between the Sao Paulo cable company and Schaumburg, Ill.-based Motorola were not disclosed. A Motorola spokesperson was not immediately available for comment.

In other Motorola news from the cable trade show, the company has inked a partnership with VoIP specialist Net2Phone .

The pact makes Motorola's VT1000 voice gateway the preferred choice for its Net2Phone's VoiceLine broadband telephony offering for cable operators.

The combined offering provides customers with a SIP-based VoIP platform that supports improved security and quality of service, the companies said.
