"Skype for the iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch finally lets you make free voice calls from anywhere—at least, for a little while. Version 3.2 of Apple's iPhone SDK, released back in February, removed restrictions on calling over 3G for third-party app developers. This paved the way for Skype to unveil true 3G-based VoIP calls for iPhone users. That's unlike the original Skype for iPhone, which worked over Wi-Fi only. However, there's a catch: Skype says that calls over 3G will only be free until the end of 2010; after that, a "small" monthly fee will apply," writes Jamie Lendino in a PCMag.com review.

"In addition to enabling 3G calls, the company has improved call quality on the iPhone 3GS ($99), iPad, and 2nd and 3rd generation iPod touch by employing a wideband audio codec. This codec will come into play when calling other iOS devices or desktop PCs with the new version. You'll know when this is working, because an "enhanced call quality" icon appears. Finally, Skype claims improved startup time, and faster access to the dial pad from the iPhone's home screen," Lendino writes.
