Avaya in Its Own Words

This is an exciting time for Avaya. In winning the auction of Nortel Enterprise Solutions, the company is adding about 6,000 employees, including 25 executives. The next half-year will be interesting and challenging, as the newly combined organization works through the integration. In the first of an ongoing series of slide shows on UC vendors products and services, Unified Communications Edge takes a look at Avaya's top products.

This key component of Avaya Aura provides an open, extensible IP Telephony platform. It offers more than 700 PBX features, high reliability and scalability, and advanced features for workforce productivity and mobility. Built-in capabilities include conferencing and contact center applications. A wide range of servers, gateways, analog, digital, and IP-based communication devices is supported.

This is the first in an ongoing series of Unified Communications Edge slide shows on top vendors' products and services. The descriptions accompanying the graphics and photos are supplied by the vendors, though they may be edited for clarity and to remove unnecessary hype.

The first slideshow focuses on Avaya. The company's UC profile, of course, is undergoing a significant expansion with the mid-December acquisition of Nortel Enterprise Solutions. As with any move of this nature – Avaya is adding about 6,000 employees and 25 managers – the surviving company will face many integration challenges and product road map decisions.

In terms of sheer size, the combined entity is in the same ballpark as Cisco. The precise pecking order, if a leader needs be identified, likely depends on the always-elusive definition of unified communications.

Next week: NEC of America Corp.
