Dialogic to Support NFV with Virtualized SBC
Native software transcoding and other enhancements position BorderNet Virtualized SBC favorably for carriers implementing network function virtualization.
New Jersey-based Dialogic yesterday announced the 3.2 release of their BorderNet session border controller (SBC) technology, which brings native software transcoding to both Dialogic's hardware-based BorderNet 4000 SBC and its BorderNet Virtualized SBC. The update will make the BorderNet Virtualized SBC "the industry's first carrier-class software session border controller with built-in transcoding that can operate in a virtualized environment on commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) servers," according to a company statement.
With the 3.2 update, Dialogic aims to position the BorderNet Virtualized SBC strongly to take advantage of carriers' and enterprises' developing network function virtualization (NFV) strategies. The company is seeing significant demand for virtualized applications like this "from service providers and enterprise customers alike," with service providers driving the move to NFV, Thomas Schroer, director of service provider marketing at Dialogic, told Enterprise Networking Planet. Many of Dialogic's customers are already in the research and planning, trial, or production stages of NFV deployments, he added.
"The primary locations for virtualized applications that we see are at the service provider access edge and enterprise edge to support SIP trunking, hosted UC services and contact center applications," Schroer told me.
The Dialogic statement lists scalable SIP, SIP-I, and SIP-T interworking support across mobile and fixed networks, IP Multimedia Subsystem Proxy Call Server Control Function (P-CSCF) functionality, and "enhanced complex call handling to support advanced UC and contact center call scenarios" among the capabilities the 3.2 update will provide. The native software transcoding, meanwhile, will enable carriers to quickly take advantage of HD Voice in multimedia sessions, bridge a variety of session types, and scale up and down with their software-driven infrastructures.
Not all enterprises have made the move to virtualized data centers yet, of course. For those who haven't, BorderNet 3.2 has future-proofing value, according to Schroer. Both the BorderNet 4000 SBC and the Virtualized SBC "share the same code base, features and management web user interface to provide consistency across a service provider's or enterprise's operational environment," he said. Enterprises that are not ready for virtualized solutions can deploy the BorderNet 4000 SBC and then later add the Virtualized SBC to address capacity growth as they virtualize. For those that are ready to implement the SBC in virtualized environments, "we try to make that easy by delivering the BorderNet Virtualized SBC in an Open Virtualization Format (OVF) so they can start taking advantage of the benefits from virtualization sooner," said Schroer.
As NFV gains traction within the data center, more virtualized versions of previously hardware-based technologies are sure to follow. Dialogic hopes to lead the way in the SBC space. Speaking about service providers, Dialogic VP of Product Management Jim Machi said in a statement, "It's in their interest to tap into the scalability, flexibility and cost savings that come with NFV, and Dialogic's native software transcoding capabilities are a critical part of that pursuit."
