Big Switch Networks got its start with the open-source Floodlight Software Defined Networking (SDN) controller. The vendor’s current product portfolio has long since forked from Floodlight, but the company still has many ties in the open-source community.
In a video interview with Enterprise Networking Planet, Rob Sherwood, CTO of Big Switch Networks, explains how his company’s product portfolio is put together and what role Linux plays.
One of the main things that Sherwood spends his time with is Open Network Linux, which is part of the Open Compute Project.
“By having the pieces that are not differentiated, it enables a whole bunch of good things,” Sherwood said. “All of our hardware partners now have a clear idea of how to work with Big Switch.”
Sherwood emphasized that Open Network Linux isn’t something that Big Switch makes money on. He said that Big Switch sees its key value as coming from the rest of the software stack.
