China has Top Supercomputer, but Not for Long

China’s claim of having built the world’s fastest supercomputer has been verified by the 36th edition of the Top 500 list of the world’s most powerful supercomputers. Tianhe-1A was followed by the former no. 1 system, the U.S.-made Cray X-T5 “Jaguar”, and another China-made supercomputer, Nebulae.

According to The Hindu, China holds five of the top 100 supercomputers and at least 40 of the top 500. After being topped by China, the U.S. has upped the ante with plans to build two 20-petaflop supercomputers to reclaim the top spot. One of the new supercomputers will be built by Oak Ridge National Laboratory, where the Jaguar is housed, says Computerworld. The second will be constructed by IBM at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory.
