OpenStack Networking Neutron Plots a Course for the Rocky Road Ahead

VANCOUVER, British Columbia — The OpenStack Networking project (Neutron) is set to gain a host of new capabilities during the  development cycle for the next major OpenStack release, codenamed Rocky.

At the OpenStack Summit, Miguel Lavalle, project technical lead (PTL) for Neutron for the current Queens and upcoming Rocky release cycle, detailed the multiple new capabilities currently in development.

Lavalle explained that when the OpenStack Networking project got started, all networking was done in a single project. For the Queens release cycle there is now a group of networking efforts know collectively as the Neutron Stadium. OpenStack Neutron

“The Neutron Stadium is a family of inter-related projects that provide all the networking services for OpenStack,” Lavalle said.


Lavalle explained that there are three basic abstractions in Neutron: networks, ports and API. He said that Neutron is pluggable, so the way API resources are implemented can change.

For the Rocky release in the Neutron core, Lavalle said that new features that are set to land include the following:

  • Multiple port binding to support VM migration
  • Port forward for floating IPs
  • Strict minimum bandwidth support
  • Improved predictability of API response on invalid query parameters
  • Change configuration options without a service restart

In the Firewall-as-a-Service (FWaaS) sub-project, Rocky should see the inclusion of remote firewall groups. In VPN-as-a-Service (VPNaaS), Rocky is set to get Quality of Service (QoS) support.

Support for the latest capabilities in Open Virtual Networking (OVN), including enhanced scalability of security groups, are also set to come to Rocky.
