PLUMgrid Embraces Containers for Network Virtualization Deployment [VIDEO]

SDN vendor PLUMgrid first emerged from stealth mode in June of 2013, offering the promise of a new overlay model for Software Defined Networking. In June of this year, PLUMgrid debuted its OpenStack Networking Suite. Now, in November, the company is updating that suite to version 2.0.

In a video interview with Enterprise Networking Planet, Awais Nemat, co-founder and CEO of PLUMgrid, explained what’s new in his company’s technology platform and where it’s headed in the future.

“We use a Linux container-based deployment model for our software,” Nemat said. “It makes it very easy for our customers to install, deploy and use.”

Nemat explained that prior to the container delivery model, PLUMgrid leveraged a standard Linux package-based approach like the RPM (Red Hat Package Manager). In the new container approach, PLUMgrid has an integration with the open-source Foreman cloud management and installation tool.

By leveraging a container approach, all the required code dependencies are taken care of, making the technology portable across multiple types of cloud deployments.

Containers have become increasingly popular over the course of the last year as a way to deploy virtualized applications. Linux Containers (LXC) is an open-source technology included in all modern Linux kernels that enables the baseline functionality for application virtualization. The open-source Docker engine leverages LXC as a base to package up applications and make them portable and easily deployable. PLUMgrid supports both LXC and Docker.
