One of the top concerns about moving to the cloud is security. Enterprises are often worried about privacy in a public multi-tenant environment. One solution to solving that concern is to move to a private cloud model, which is something that Verizon’s Terremark cloud division is now providing.
“Our mainstream enterprise cloud that has been around for four years now is a multi-tenant public cloud used by large companies and government agencies,” Ellen Rubin, Terremark’s vice president of Cloud Products, told InternetNews.com. “What some customers have requested from us is to build something that is more dedicated and not offered in a multi-tenant design.”
Rubin noted that Terremark had been doing customized private cloud deployments and is now announcing a generally available private cloud offering.
The Private Cloud offering is not just a branded term for some kind of traditional co-location hosting either, according to Rubin.
“It’s not like co-location in the sense that, with Private Cloud there are some aspects that dedicated and some that are still shared architecture,” Rubin explained. “For example, some of the underlying core networking is shared as is the user interface and the APIs.”
The Terremark private cloud is providing the best of both shared and private by providing dedicated compute and storage, while still being able to leverage the cost economies and expertise of the public cloud.
The other key differentiator is that Terremark has built in workload portability features that enable a hybrid model for workload deployment.
“CloudSwitch software is a standard part of this offering and it allows for connectivity from the customer data centers into the private and public editions,” Rubin said. “It also provides the ability to move workloads in an easy and secure way across different environments.”
Going a step further, Rubin explained that CloudSwitch does layer 2 bridging. That enables CloudSwitch to connect into enterprise ActiveDirectory systems and extend that into the cloud, providing a higher level of security.
The benefit of a public cloud is that enterprises can easily scale their needs as required, without the need to overly provision up front. When it comes to a private cloud, where resources aren’t shared, the usage acquisition model is a bit different.
“Storage is dedicated in private cloud and we have small medium and large configurations,” Rubin said. “But essentially what they’re doing is committing to a set of resources up front.”
As such, there is a pricing premium that Terremark has for the private edition over the public cloud, as dedicated resources are being provisioned for customer use.
