Google is the latest fan of liquid-cooled servers, reports Katie Fehrenbacher at Earth2Tech. The Internet giant has patented a design for a liquid-cooled server sandwich that uses two motherboards wrapped around a liquid-cooled heat sink.

The design is just the latest among many new cooling techniques by Google, says Data Center Knowledge. An advantage of liquid-based cooling is that it is more efficient at transferring heat than air, offering the potential for significant cost savings since roughly half of data center costs go toward powering cooling technology.
