Cisco Revs the WAN

Cisco Systems has announced new networking solutions for data center and branch deployments it claims will enable remote users to get “LAN-like application response times” over enterprise WANs.

The new products include the Cisco Application Velocity System (AVS), a family of application acceleration, security and monitoring appliances for data centers, and the Cisco Wide-area Application Engine (WAE), a series of appliances designed for application delivery, file and rich media access in branch offices.

Cisco says its AVS product family, which includes the AVS 3120 and AVS 3180 appliances, accelerates, monitors and secures Web-based application delivery to remote users across the extended network without requiring changes to clients or servers. The company says AVS accelerates and optimizes HTML or XML-based applications over HTTP or HTTPS, “resulting in response time improvements of as much as 500 percent, bandwidth requirement decreases of as much as 80 percent and reduction of server processing cycles by as much as 80 percent.”

The AVS 3120 is designed for remote users accessing web-based application and portals such as Oracle, Siebel, and SAP across the WAN. The device offloads specific server processes to minimize the communication overhead required to render pages in these applications.

The AVS 3180 features end-to-end monitoring and reporting for application response time network-wide.

The Cisco Wide-area Application Engine (WAE) is the company’s next generation multi-service branch office platform. It offers application acceleration and wide-area network optimization. Cisco says it includes caching and application protocol optimization to overcome the bandwidth and latency limitations associated with TCP/IP and client-server protocols.

This initial release features the Cisco Wide Area File Services (WAFS) and Cisco Application and Content Networking System (ACNS) running on a family of appliances that include the Cisco WAE-511, WAE-611, and WAE-7326. Cisco WAE is also offered as a network module for the Cisco integrated services routers.

Cisco AVS and Cisco WAE are available immediately. Cisco AVS 3120 is priced at $34,995; Cisco AVS 3180 management station is priced at $14,995. Pricing for Cisco WAE begins at $5,500.
