Cisco: Routers

The entire portfolio ranges from the top end with the flagship CRS-3 for service providers all the way down to small business routers like the RV220W. In between those extremes is the integrated services router (ISR) platform, which sits at the sweet spot of enterprise deployment use cases.

The ISR platform is the most widely deployed of Cisco’s routing platforms with at least seven million units in the field. The platform first debuted in 2004 and hits its second generation release in 2009.

The ISR portfolio includes fixed as well as modular chassis that enable administrators to plug-in new modules for additional services. Those services include WAN acceleration, security and application serving features among others.

Cisco’s other key routing platform is the aggregation services router (ASR) first debuted in 2008 after $250 million of research and development investments by Cisco.
