Chinese networking vendor Huawei is ramping up its campus networking switching portfolio with the new S12700, which Huawei is positioning as an “Agile Switch,” flexible for the modern and growing needs of organizations.
The S12700 is also a big switch with lots of capacity. Each S12700 chassis can provide up 100 Gigabit Ethernet (GbE) ports and as many as 576 10 GbE ports. The large port capacity will help to meet the ever-growing bandwidth needs of modern campus networks.
Huawei’s Ethernet Network Processor (ENP) chip, a programmable chip dedicated for Ethernet forwarding, sits at the core of the S12700. Huawei claims that ENP adoption allows for accelerated service deployment, greater power optimization and improved cost efficiency.
Huawei isn’t the only vendor boasting of programmability embedded in a switch. In April of this year, Juniper Networks announced its EX9200, which also includes programmability features.
According to Huawei, the new platform’s simplified management makes the S12700 more “agile” than prior Huawei switches. The system allows for converged network management of both wireless and wired networks.
The system also includes what Huawei refers to as the Packet Conservation Algorithm for Internet (iPCA) technology. That is a technology that monitors Quality of Service (QoS) and can ensure the right level of service for data transmission.
The S12700 follows Huawei’s release earlier this year of the CE12816 CloudEngine switch announced in May. The CE12816 is a 64 Tbps platform with support for up to 1,536 10 GbE line-speed ports.
