ManageEngine, headquartered in Pleasanton, California, is a privately held software company that is part of the larger ZOHO Corporation. ZOHO has three divisions that provide network management solutions for different market segments: ManageEngine is focused on IT management, Zoho.com deals with online business, productivity and collaboration applications, and WebNMS is focused on the needs of OEMs. ZOHO started building SNMP-based network and element management systems for the telecom industry in 1996. After the dotcom and telecom bust of early 2000, ZOHO diversified into the enterprise network management space, using the carrier-grade network management platform that they had developed as the basis for their new product line. Today, the company claims to have over 40,000 customers worldwide for the ManageEngine software line, including three out of every five of the Fortune 500 listed companies. These customers are spread across a wide diversity of industries, and include such heavyweights as Ace Hardware, Amazon, Barclays Bank, Dupont, Ferrari, Goodyear Tire, Halliburton, Metropolitan Life, Nokia, PepsiCo, Pfizer, Tektronix, plus the U.S. Army and Navy.
The ManageEngine suite includes over 20 network and systems management products that comprise a complete portfolio for managing the mid-sized enterprise. From the list above, you can see that ManageEngine covers the gamut of enterprise IT management: network performance management, helpdesk and desktop management, datacenter management, security and compliance, managed service platforms, and on-demand solutions.
As an example of one of the modules, the OpManager is a complete, end-to-end network and IT infrastructure monitoring platform that that offers advanced fault and performance management across network devices, servers, printers, applications, databases, WAN links and VoIP services.
The software includes automatic network discovery and mapping, with more 600 device and 200 interface templates for start monitoring the devices as soon as they are discovered. OpManager can alert administrators via e-mail or SMS, and also undertake remediation actions by triggering self-curing patches and scripts, log a ticket to the ServiceDesk Plus module, and more. Also included is extensive Windows infrastructure monitoring (Event Log Monitoring, Windows Services Monitoring, Remote Processes Diagnostics, Process monitoring), plus an exclusive dashboard for Microsoft SQL, Exchange and Active Directory Monitors, to help administrators to know the status without scrolling down to each monitor. These three monitors come with pre-configured threshold points, which can be adjusted later as system characteristics become better known. If a Windows service is found to be down, that service can be restarted from OpManager itself. It also provides remote process monitoring, by identifying the top ten processes by CPU or memory and even terminate an offending process.
In addition to the server and services management, OpManager also provides a comprehensive network performance management solution by observing WAN link availability and performance monitoring, bandwidth analysis, network configuration management, and VoIP Quality of Service (QoS) monitoring (see Figure 1).
