InformationWeek says criminals will likely be targeting holiday shoppers with smishing and vishing, SMS text and voicemail scams respectively, in an effort to steal personal information. The FBI explains that criminals pilfer phone numbers from banks and credit companies and use these lists to target people.
The FBI encourages people to use common sense and not respond to text messages or automated voice messages from unknown or blocked numbers. The FBI also recommends that people use credit cards for all online purchases, rather than bank accounts or debit cards.
