Cisco Report Shows More Menacing Scams on the Rise

According to Cisco’s 2009 Annual Security Report, more menacing forms of cyber crime, like social media and the data-theft Trojans, are supplanting phishing, instant messaging malware and DDoS attacks, reports Computerworld.

Attacks like the Koobface worm and the Zeus password-stealing Trojan are on the rise as savvy consumers become more wary of messages from unknown sources and suspicious banking sites. Patrick Peterson, a Cisco researcher, explains:

[Cyber criminals are] focusing on other ways to basically accomplish the same thing.

However, one attack that isn’t showing signs of abating is spam. In fact, Cisco expects spam to increase between 30 and 40 percent next year.
