Gartner: Adapt Security Systems in Move to Private Cloud says a new report from Gartner encourages enterprises to adapt their security as they make the move from virtual data center use to the private cloud.

According to the report, by 2015 over a third of all data center security controls will be virtualized. Thomas Bittman, a vice president and analyst at Gartner, says security should be considered during the move, not after the fact:

the need for security must not be overlooked or ‘bolted on’ later during the transition to private cloud computing.

As IT Business Edge blogger Sue Marquette Poremba notes, “Security in the cloud is still a generally unknown entity.” Gartner says the virtualization of security controls will be a good starting point to securing private cloud infrastructures. However, enterprises should be mindful that alone it will not be enough to create a secure private cloud.

The analyst firm offers some tips for beginning the transition, such as starting with a set of on-demand and elastic services and making security on-demand, instead of part of a set of siloed products.
