Microsoft Scrubs Nearly 275,000 PCs of Zeus

One week after Microsoft added Zeus detection to its Malicious Software Removal Tool, the company claims the free tool has cleaned the botnet from nearly 275,000 Windows computers, reports Computerworld. That makes Zeus the number-one malware being removed by MSRT, according to a company blog post.

Zeus has been making the news quite a bit lately. As we reported on our IT Business Edge site, Fortinet has discovered that a gang is using the botnet to target Charles Schwab investment accounts. Blogger Sue Marquette Poremba reports that hackers are using Zeus to jam phone lines of financial institutions so they cannot make verification calls.
