According to Sophos, the United States was the top spam-sending country in the fourth quarter, accounting for more than 18 percent of all spam traffic, reports eSecurity Planet. Coming in second was India, followed by Brazil, Russia and the UK.
The security vendor also says that malicious spam now makes up almost 5 percent of all e-mail traffic. The increasing volume and sophistication of spam campaigns is due to users’ interests in the products being offered. Sophos estimates that more than 36 million Americans bought prescription drugs from unlicensed online sellers.
The promise of something “free” is also a lucrative hook for spammers. A new phishing campaign that looks to log personal details promises a $150 cash reward for completing a Coca-Cola survey.
