Computerworld reports that suspicious applications that have shown up on Google’s Android Market may have stolen users’ online banking credentials. Google has since yanked the applications from its app store.
09Droid was responsible for “dozens of these applications,” says Mikko Hypponen, the chief research officer of F-Secure. He suspects:
09Droid may simply have been trying to cash in by offering apps that do nothing but provide a shortcut to the online bank’s site, which the user could reach himself in the browser.
There is no way to prove that the applications were malware since Google has pulled them. However, Hypponen expects malicious Android apps to appear since Google does not vet applications in its online store.
