According to Computerworld, UK police have arrested 19 people in connection with a criminal ring that used the Zeus banking Trojan to steal passwords and login names from Windows computers. The criminals then used the information to set up unauthorized balance transfers to accounts controlled by the gang.
Police say the gang managed to steal $9.5 million during a three-month period.
Of the 19 Eastern Europeans arrested, 11 have been charged with conspiracy to defraud and money laundering crimes. In a statement, the Metropolitan Police said:
We believe we have disrupted a highly organized criminal network, which has used sophisticated methods to siphon large amounts of cash from many innocent peoples’ accounts.
