VIDEO: Juniper’s Argon Secure Aims to Defend Networks from Within

Juniper Networks is expanding its network defense capabilities with the Argon Secure service in a bid to help enterprises secure themselves from the inside out.

In a video interview with Enterprise Networking Planet, Nawaf Bitar, SVP Nawaf Bitar, Juniperand GM of Security at Juniper, explained how deception-based techniques are a key part of IT security.

Juniper has had deception-based defensive technologies in its portfolio ever since it acquired software vendor Mykonos for $80 million in February of 2012. That technology has since been rebranded as Juniper Web App Secure and uses all manner of deception techniques to trick attackers into following the wrong path.

“Juniper Web App Secure is designed for stopping outside-in threats,” Bitar said. “We’ve now taken the same techniques of intrusion deception and applied them to the campus and branch to the inside-out problem, where employees are doing damage or where threats have already infiltrated.”

Bitar noted that traditional security defenses typically stop at the network entry point. The Argon technology is an active defense technology and, as such, enables enterprises to find threats even after they are on the network.

A key item that Argon looks for are communications from malware on the network back out to some form of command and control server.

“Malware inside the network is useless if it doesn’t actually exfiltrate the data,” Bitar said.
