There are a lot of different ways to make a website faster.
Google is now preparing to package up its code effort for website acceleration into a new service.
The Page Speed service builds on Google’s mod_pagespeed tool which is freely available today for Apache web servers. The general idea with mod_pagespeed is that it optimizes website content items such as CSS in an effort to accelerate page delivery.
“Page Speed Service is an online service that automatically speeds up loading of your web pages,” Ram Ramani, Engineering Manager at Google said in a blog post. “To use the service, you need to sign up and point your site’s DNS entry to Google. Page Speed Service fetches content from your servers, rewrites your pages by applying web performance best practices, and serves them to end users via Google’s servers across the globe.”
Google has had a public DNS service available since 2009 which also helps to expedite queries to websites, but does not actually optimize site code like the Page Speed service.
For now, Google’s Page Speed service is an invitation only service though Google is now taking applications for those interested when it opens up to a wider audience.
